The Acquisition of Verbs by Amharic Speaking Children

The study describes the acquisition of verb by typically developing Amharic-speaking children. It recruitedcross-sectional research design to gather speeches’ data from thirty-two children using picture description, spontaneous elicitation, and story-tellingtasks. Thedata were audio- recorded, transcribed IPA, analyzed. result showed that most ofAmharic speakingchildren’s verbs appeared as single utterances. Verbs such progressive, pastand imperfective predominantly frequent in a way; especially past potentially meaningful simple sentence without overt subject object.Similarly, auxiliary verbs, linking or helping verb, they had consistent occurrence childrensimple SOVsentences guided auxiliaries. Moreover, perfective, imperatives, gerund significant representation. However, passives least not even detected some children’s speeches. alsoconfirmed, leading place followed imperfective. Children also varied their choice while describing things, expressing ideas, narrating events. Some used certain monotonously but others weremore selective andstraightforward point. In this regard, olderage (4;5and 5;0years) girls better performance. distribution type frequency portrayed how more salient than others. sum, progressive likely acquired earlier like seemingly need time. This implies order differs cross linguistically due nature derivational inflectional morphology are able acquire first.
